What is Chicken Double Onion?
Aha …
The thought of double onion ignited my mind to make the dish
in its authentic style. Of course I googled about the dish but there is no
authentic recipe style or way to do it perfectly. So I started making it the
way shown in several websites,
First time it's a waste of time,
Second time it's a way of making garbage in home,
Third time same again
And again
.......................so on and
Thirty sixth time it turned out to have an authentic taste
to it.
Hmm I don't want to test your patience with my process and stuff either
so I am coming straight to the history of this recipe. First thing is first
Chicken do pyazaa or chicken dopiaza or chicken double onion is a special
chicken dish. The term itself is explaining the dish. It’s made with chicken
and twice the onions we usually use. You might have eaten many chicken dishes
but chicken double onion is a special dish to have onions and chicken. It's
healthy because of rich content of onions used in it which usually have zinc in
them to gain more resistance. Dopiaza meaning double onions, it is prepared
with a large amount of onions, both cooked in the curry and as a garnish.
Onions are added at two stages during cooking, hence the name double onions.
Ingredients:
(Serves Three)
Chicken -
500gms (boneless)
Onions -
250gms (Sliced)
Curd - 100gms
Olive Oil -
5tbsp
Chilli Powder -
1 or 2tbsp
Dried Red chillies
- 2 or 3
Ginger Garlic
Paste - 3 or 4tbsp
Turmeric - 1tbsp
Garam Masala - 2tbsp
Coriander Powder - 1 or 2tbsp
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tbsp
Cumin Powder - 1 tbsp
Green Chilli’s -
2 or 3 (slit or chopped)
Coriander Leaves - For Garnish
Salt - To taste
Lemon wedge - to squeeze
Recipe Process:

Take a pan
o
Add oil
o
Add cumin seeds, onion slices and cook till they
become golden brown in color.
o
Yogurt Mixture: In a small bowl take un sweetened
yogurt (curd) add chilli powder, garam masala, coriander powder, cumin powder
and mix then well so that no lumps formed in our yogurt.
o
Once onions turned into golden brown in color
add ginger garlic paste. Cook it for 3 to 4 minutes so that no raw flavors of
ginger garlic remains in our dish.

Add turmeric powder saute it for 1 minute.
o
Add yogurt mixture and cook it for 3 minutes.
o
Add chicken pieces and cook it for 8 minutes.
o
Onion Garnish: Take a pan and add oil and dried
red chillis and onion dices and saute it for 3 minutes.
o
Add the Onion garnish in to the chicken dish and
cook it for 2 minutes.
o
Squeeze a lime wedge.
o
Plate it and garnish with chopped coriander
leaves.
The moment you eat a bite of this dish you'll feel like
sitting beside Moghul emperor Akbar. In some versions history also says that
this dish was made by Akbar when he accidentally added more onions while making
love with his wife. So why wait, just make this dish for your beloved one and
surprise them by showing your skill.
Later the dish has flown to Hyderabad and stood still there.
Eventually became part of Hyderabad cuisine. While making it be safe and play
safe with kitchen also enjoy the taste of this delicious yummy dish.
